Whether it’s through the eyes of some high school stoners or a middle age couple, director Richard Linklater has always been obsessed with coming of age stories and the inevitable passage of time (which he discussed in a wonderful video produced by Sight & Sound Magazine). In Linklater’s latest film, Boyhood, he takes those two story elements to the extreme to create one of the most unique films ever made. More after the jump.
The film stars newcomer Ellar Coltrane as Mason, but the thing is he isn’t really a newcomer. Boyhood was filmed over a twelve year period, chronicling Mason’s life from the age of 6 to 18, making this the most realistic coming of age story ever put on screen. Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and Linklater’s own daughter, Lorelei, also star and their transformations on screen should be equally as fascinating to watch. Even though we only have a minute plus peak at this movie, it looks to be something really special. There may never be another movie made quite like Boyhood, so make sure to check it out when it’s released in select theaters on July 11th.
