Neighbors dominated the weekend with a very strong opening of $49 million. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 dropped a stunning 61%. Not so amazing now, eh, Spider-Man? (What am I doing right now?) More on the weekend box office breakdown after the jump!
1. Neighbors – $49 million
A very strong opening for a comedy, the latest in film from Nicholas Stoller proves that regular guys and incredibly attractive guys will never be friends. Or will they?
2. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – $35.5 million
Word of mouth was enough to get people to stop checking out what happens when video game violence is surrounded by two swell kids in love. All the on-screen chemistry in the world couldn’t save this film.
3. The Other Woman – $9.6 million
I’m assuming Neighbors was sold out in many theaters.
4. Heaven is for Real – $7.4 million
…andt Godzilla isn’t?
5. Captain America: The Winter Soldier – $5.7 million
Oh Captain, my captain.
Not-So Honorable Mentions
7. Mom’s Night Out – $4.3 million
A Christian family movie starring a country music artist released on Mother’s Day weekend… Frankly, I’m shocked it opened so terribly.
8. Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return – $3.7 million
Who has heard of this movie? Looking at the box office reports is the first time I’ve heard of it. It opened to less than $4 million, and had an $85 million budget. What a gigantic loss this is for Clarius Entertainment. Wait, what the hell is Clarius Entertainment? Where did this come from? Lea Michele, Martin Short, Dan Aykroyd, Kelsey Grammer, Jim Belushi, Oliver Platt, and Patrick Stewart are all in this movie. What?
